8. Tour: The Live App, Screen by Screen
Here is the finished product, exactly as a visitor and then a member experiences it, on desktop and on a phone. The journey is deliberately short: land, find someone, see what they'd love, and add your own list.
Land. One box, no clutter
The landing page has one job: find a person. A search box sits front and centre with five filter chips beneath it. Floating icons drift with the pointer (and tilt with the phone) but never cover the text. Light mode is the default; dark mode is one tap away.
Find. Search and filters that get out of the way
Type a name, or narrow by Age, Gender, Occupation, Education and Interests. Each chip opens its menu right underneath it, and Interests accepts several picks at once. As soon as a search starts, the headline shrinks and the intro text folds away so results take the stage. A "Clear all" chip brings the full landing page back.
Open a profile and come back, and the search is exactly as you left it: same filters, same scroll position.
See. Profiles built around gifts
A profile shows only what helps you choose: who they are, what they are into, which gift categories they like, and their wishlist with prices. No feed, no noise.
Join. One honest form
Membership starts with a short profile: name, birth date, gender, occupation, education, at least one hobby and one favourite gift category. A two-item quick wishlist is optional, so people leave with something already on their list. Every field is validated on the server as well as the browser, and the form screens out bots, so the directory stays full of real people.
Match. What members get
Signed-in members see a match percentage on every person in the results, comparing that profile with their own, so people who share their taste rise to the top. Members also get their own wishlist (name, link and price), plus a "Need Inspiration?" list of curated ideas they can add in one tap.
Phone first. The same journey in your pocket
Most gift browsing happens on a phone, so the filters collapse into one swipeable row of chips and each menu opens in place beneath its chip. Pick an occupation and the list narrows right there.
Since launch. What I changed after real use
- A calmer visual identity. I moved to a warm "Nude" palette with Fraunces headings and DM Sans body text, light by default with a dark option.
- Search that scales. Results now come from a single cached database query, so they stay fast as the member count grows.
- Filters that respect the screen. Chips with in-place menus replaced the long filter stack, so results appear without scrolling.
- Real members only. Spam sign-ups taught me to validate every field on the server and add bot traps, rate limits and an email-domain blocklist.
- Affiliate links that pay for the site. Amazon links are tagged automatically (including short links, which are expanded first) and marked as sponsored.
Transparency: some wishlist links on The Giftings are affiliate links. If you buy through one, the site may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.
